Candle

The spaces

like boxes to fill

Rest against each-other

An empire to build.

Gaps with a purpose

Waiting to feel again.

Searching for the meaning

They so ardently defend.

The footprints trailed

In setting concrete

The known lost cause

The open defeat

Words fill the hollows

Beneath what is there

Tempting the boxes

Who are no longer bare.

Feelings in the void

They rattle and discourse

One becomes the other

Textured

Rough

Remorse.

It kneels there beside us

Whispering of its death

I look to the hourglass

Not

Long

Left.

There in the dim light

Sits hope with a candle

Watching the wax fall

Collecting at the handle.

Looking there beside us

He smiles at what he sees

That’s when I realise his burden

Now belongs to me.
